Lauren Heike was followed along a hiking trail before being stabbed 15 times. What her killer later told detectives has now resurfaced.
Zion Teasley admitted murdering 29-year-old Lauren Heike — with police documents revealing what was going on in the killer’s life before the attack.
When detectives showed Zion Teasley a picture of murdered hiker Lauren Heike, the killer reportedly made a disturbing comment about wanting to look like her.

A killer who stabbed a 29-year-old woman 15 times on a hiking trail had previously written about struggling with gender identity and later told police the victim was “what I would want to look like”.
Zion Teasley, 25, has pleaded guilty to the first-degree murder of Lauren Heike, who was brutally attacked while hiking near her home in Phoenix, Arizona, in April 2023.
The plea agreement means Teasley is expected to spend the rest of their life behind bars, while prosecutors have agreed to withdraw their intention to seek the death penalty.
Sentencing is scheduled for December 4.
But details contained in police documents have brought renewed attention to what Teasley told investigators following the murder.
A lengthy police report previously obtained by local media described Teasley struggling with gender identity, sexuality and Christian faith before Heike’s death.
According to reports on the documents, Teasley wrote about “battling with my gender identity and sexuality” and questioned how those feelings fitted alongside a desire to live according to Christian beliefs.
Investigators similarly described Teasley as being concerned about the “salvation of his soul” because of his thoughts and internal struggle with sexuality.
Teasley reportedly also described becoming depressed when seeing women they considered beautiful.
Then came a particularly striking comment during questioning over Heike’s murder.
Teasley initially claimed to recognise the 29-year-old only from news coverage of her death.
But while discussing Heike with investigators, Teasley reportedly remarked: “That’s what I would want to look like.”
Police have not established that Teasley’s gender identity was the motive for Heike’s murder, however, and investigators have previously described the killing as apparently random. The two were not known to each other before the attack.
Lauren was followed along the trail
Heike was hiking on the Reach 11 trail in north Phoenix on the morning of April 28, 2023 when she was attacked.
Surveillance footage captured a man walking behind her before the pair disappeared from view.
According to court documents, Heike was approximately 36 seconds ahead of the man before he was later seen sprinting.
Investigators believe Heike was chased before being attacked.
She suffered 15 stab wounds to her upper body, while injuries to her hands and forearms indicated she had attempted to defend herself.
Evidence suggested she had also gone through a barbed-wire fence while desperately trying to escape.
Her injuries ultimately proved fatal.
Heike’s body was discovered the following day in a desert area behind a home.
Police launched a murder investigation and released surveillance footage showing a person they wanted to identify.
Detectives soon focused on Teasley.
DNA recovered from one of Heike’s shoes produced a match to Teasley through a criminal database.
Investigators also obtained cellphone location evidence and other forensic information they said connected Teasley to the area around the time of the murder.
Teasley lived around a mile from the trail and was arrested days after Heike’s body was discovered.
At the time of the killing, Teasley was on probation after previously serving time in prison for offences including armed robbery.
Detectives also spoke to a former employer who said Teasley had recently been fired following allegations of aggressive behaviour towards female colleagues and suspected theft.
The employer reportedly identified Teasley from surveillance footage and said clothing being worn matched items stolen from the business.
Police said Teasley was also known to carry a three-inch pocketknife, which investigators believed was consistent with Heike’s wounds.
Teasley had briefly entered US Marine Corps recruit training in 2019 but separated from the service before completing boot camp.
Family backs life sentence deal
More than three years after Heike’s murder, Teasley changed their plea to guilty on October 2.
Prosecutors had previously announced their intention to seek the death penalty.
Under the agreement presented in court, that notice will be withdrawn and Teasley will instead receive a natural-life prison sentence for first-degree murder.
Teasley has also pleaded guilty in a separate case to sexual exploitation of a minor. Sentencing in both cases is scheduled for December 4.
Heike’s family said they supported the murder plea agreement despite previously backing prosecutors’ attempt to seek the death penalty.
They said avoiding a trial meant they would not have to sit through every detail surrounding Lauren’s death.
“While no sentence will ever bring Lauren back, we are relieved knowing that he will never be released,” the family said.
They added that Teasley would never again have the opportunity to harm another person or put another family through the same trauma.
The family said they now hoped to concentrate less on how Lauren died and instead remember the life she lived and the future she had been building.
For investigators, the guilty plea closes the central question of who murdered Lauren.
What remains less clear is why.
Police have said Teasley and Heike did not know each other and have described the attack as random. Despite the details contained in Teasley’s writings and the comment about wanting to look like Heike, authorities have not publicly established that gender identity played a role in the decision to attack her.
Teasley is due to be formally sentenced on December 4.
